Questions we've been asked.
Q: How much do you pay, and do you pay by word or piece?
A: At this time there is no pay schedule. We are a free to read magazine that has been open for three days, our budget simply does not allow for the commissions we feel our writers deserve. Please read the guidelines!
Q: So we can make up a story or poem, or review a story or poem?
A: Yes, but its not that simple. We are looking for specific material--namely dark speculative fiction. Think Stephen King. Think Dean Koontz. Think Chuck Palahniuk. Think Shimmer Magazine. If you're not familiar with dsf (dark speculative fiction) you need to familiarize yourself with the genre(s). Again, please read the guidelines!!
Q: What do you mean, you edit manuscripts? Does that mean my work will be changed? Different from the piece I submitted?
A: Good question! Yes and no. We do edit manuscripts, but we do not change them. If we feel your work needs some editing, we will edit a copy and send it back to you. You will make the final decision as to the acceptable changes. If we feel a portion needs to be rewritten, we will ask you to rewrite it. We strive to give guidance and direction while not doing your work for you.
Q: Do you accept simultaneous submissions?
A: Only if we have to. We would prefer not to, but there is no guarantee we will accept your manuscript. Also, being a young magazine and fairly foolish, we have not yet had a bad experience with SS. If you do submit here and somewhere else, please let us know!
